When researching into movie posters I looked for similar posters in the horror genre and looked for characteristics of these. There are clear differences from other genres like comedy for one example being they are brighter in colour to attract the reader to it. Horror posters come in many different styles and the one I will be discussing about is the Strangers poster. The Strangers is about a couple who are living in a house in the middle of nowhere when their house is broken into by three strangers. I came across three posters from this film but I chose to use the Spanish for its use of two photographs and combing it into one to give it a creepy affect with the strangers standing over them. I have used this as inspiration in designing my poster combining two images. I am obviously not going to copy the movie poster but will take inspiration through the layout of images in the design of my poster. The main image is of the Intruder in the white mask looking straight into the distance. With the smaller image of the two teenagers who’s house is entered by the intruder. I have strategically placed the intruder on top as it is the first place where the reader will see in the poster so this will be the main focus of the poster. The main image being the intruder also works as it is seen to be on top and watching over the two teenagers like he has in the trailer when intruding in the house. I have used the image of the two teenagers looking out to the distance which is appropriate as they would be doing this when looking out for the intruder. This can also be seen in the stranger’s poster below with the female character looking out as well which is emphasised with her head being at a tilted angle to show she is focusing on something in the distance. I like this idea with the photography of the character as it gives more story and thought to the character instead of a normal plain picture, this develops the story giving more clues about the film and what they may be experiencing for example with the strangers someone breaking into your house. I have edited both images giving them a darker tint then instead of using the raw file which would not have been effective in looking like a horror poster, so to add to this adding the darker tints this makes both images more serious and dark which will appeal to the audience of horror fans because it would be pointless using bright happy colours when the genre is around darker terrifying colours.
